The first growing areas of pistachio trees in Iran

The wild and pistachio forests of Iran in the northeastern region of Iran, the Sarakhs region and its southern Iranian Pistachio regions up to Zadabad Torbat-e Jam have an ancient history.

It is thought that the pistachio tree was domesticated and cultivated in Iran about 3-4 thousand years ago and after Iran it was transferred to other parts of the world, especially to the countries around the Mediterranean Sea.

Among the views on the origin of pistachio trees, in addition to Iran, Afghanistan and Turkestan are also mentioned. However, the current territories of Iran, Afghanistan and Turkestan are geographical units with separate political borders.

One of the oldest pistachio growing areas in Iran is Sarakhs, Gorgan, Qom and Redus. Also, according to the available documents from 1500 years ago in Qazvin, Semnan, Jiroft and Damghan, the cultivation of this product was common. While Rafsanjan, Kerman, Sirjan, Yazd, Isfahan and Zarand regions are between 100 and 250 years old and the history of Babak, Zahedan, Saravan, Dargaz, Varamin, Abadeh and Darab in pistachio cultivation is less than 100 years.

Currently, Kerman province and Rafsanjan region are considered as the most important pistachio growing region in Iran and the world. Currently, there are more than 350,000 hectares of fertile and infertile pistachio orchards in the country, of which about 280,000 hectares are located in Kerman province. In ancient Arabic books, the word pistachio is used in contrast to the Arabic word (pistachio).
